He has so many quirky behaviors but there is one that we just cannot figure out. Luther REFUSES to eat out of his dish. Won't do it.
Here he is facing off with his dish.
He will stare at the dish for hours. Sometimes days. But we know the secret. The secret is to put the food absolutely anywhere else but IN THE DISH.
Has anyone ever heard of this crazy behavior? We've tried lots of tricks, like hiding rice and snausages and cheese and salmon and pizza crust and lots of other tasty things at the bottom of his dish. He works around it. Won't eat his food.
And see this face? This is the face of a hungry dog. Sometimes Kevin tries to help Luther out and pours a little General Tso's sauce or gravy or something over his food. Generally I don't do this because I really, really want him to eat out of his dish all on his own. In this picture Luther is VERY hungry because he hasn't eaten since yesterday morning (aside from the occassional reward for going outside to, you know).
Just to prove that this is about the dish and not about the food, I've taken a video to demonstrate his clear preference for eating his food off the floor. Notice how he's acting like he hasn't seen food in weeks. WHY WON'T HE JUST EAT OUT OF HIS DISH????
(also, please forgive the Friends episode that is so obviously playing in the background)

Hi Amy - old GCC friend checking in. I saw your blog on Christina and Sarah's and had to say hi! Anyway - did you watch Gilmore Girls? Because this seems like something Lorelei's dog would have done? As for my dog she'll eat anything anywhere but the food out of her bowl would probably be her last choice.
Try this one, cut a hole in the floor and bury the bowl down to ground level. It will think it's drinking out of a puddle. Another option is to simply purchase an extra toilet and bingo it becomes the new dog dish. Although with a dog Luther's size it will need to be a really small toilet.
okay, that's funny.
dogs and children are not all that different... behavior-wise. they're actually really different in a lot of ways, but this seems like something my kids would do or have done.
gosh, i love the video clips! are you using a video camera? we don't have one.
Man, and I thought I was stubborn!
Oh, I kind of miss Luther! That's funny, because Joshua will also only eat food off the floor. He threw all his chicken off the high chair and wanted nothing to do with it until we took him out of the chair and let him pick the pieces up off the floor. So clearly I'm no help to you.
YES! Daisy does this. We were all at Erin's house for Bible study and wondering why she was kicking Daisy's food dish to spill it . . . she said that she won't eat out of the dish EVER! (Daisy is the cavalier seen here http://avoasp.blogspot.com/2007/08/my-new-dog-friends.html)
We miss our grandpug! After seeing him on video, went to the pet store to play with a pug puppy (so cute, but had a terrible cough) - of course, no comparison to Lu's charming personality.
Sarah told me about Luther's Hunger Strike. My dog Daisy is not a fan of eating out of her bowl either. If she is hungry enough she will do it but she much prefers to eat off of the floor or be hand-fed. Interestingly enough, when she goes to my parents house she eats out of a square Tupperware container without any problem or reservations. Last night at Bible Study we were discussing the issue and came up with a few suggestions. You might try: a plastic container or Tupperware, a bigger bowl, a different shape bowl. Best of luck!
Hi, Erin!
GREAT suggestions! And may I just say that Luther does the SAME THING when he goes to my parents' house?!? He loves the plastic dish that they provide for him. I think maybe he hates the ceramic of his dish or something. The one thing I'm sure of is that this is not such an uncommon problem!
Thank you very much for your suggestions, everyone! Luther WILL be fed, come hell or highwater.
